7‑Day Japan Itinerary: Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka Route

Facebook Twitter Pinterest Email Telegram WhatsApp Threads Copy Link

A 7-day Japan itinerary covering Tokyo (東京), Kyoto (京都) and Osaka (大阪) is one of the most practical routes for a first visit. It uses the Tokaido Shinkansen (東海道新幹線) to connect three very different cities without excessive backtracking, giving you modern city life, historic temples and a strong food scene within one week.

This route is often called the golden route because it links Japan’s most requested first-trip destinations by fast, frequent trains. It suits travellers who want variety without spending several hours a day simply getting between cities.

7-Day Itinerary Overview

  • Day 1, Tokyo: Arrival and Shinjuku (新宿).
  • Day 2, Tokyo: Asakusa (浅草), Tokyo Skytree, Shibuya (渋谷).
  • Day 3, Tokyo: Meiji Jingu (明治神宮), Harajuku (原宿).
  • Day 4, Kyoto: Shinkansen to Kyoto, Higashiyama (東山), Gion (祇園).
  • Day 5, Kyoto: Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社), Arashiyama (嵐山).
  • Day 6, Osaka: Osaka Castle (大阪城), Dotonbori (道頓堀).
  • Day 7, Osaka or Nara: Nara (奈良) day trip, or return to Tokyo for departure.

Day 1: Arrival in Tokyo and Shinjuku

Most international flights arrive at Haneda Airport (羽田空港) or Narita Airport (成田空港). Use your first day to reach the city, check into your hotel and have a relaxed evening rather than an ambitious sightseeing schedule.

  • Travel into central Tokyo using an airport train or limousine bus service.
  • Base yourself near Shinjuku, Shibuya or Tokyo Station depending on your onward plans.
  • Explore Shinjuku in the evening, including Omoide Yokocho (思い出横丁) and the free observation decks at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (東京都庁), subject to their current opening hours.

Keeping day one light helps with jet lag and gives you a calmer introduction to a very large city.

Day 2: Asakusa, Tokyo Skytree and Shibuya

Day two mixes historic Tokyo with its modern skyline. Start in Asakusa, cross the river towards Tokyo Skytree, then finish the evening in Shibuya.

  • Morning: Visit Sensoji Temple (浅草寺) and walk along Nakamise-dori (仲見世通り).
  • Afternoon: Head to Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー) for city views, then browse the Tokyo Solamachi shopping complex beneath the tower.
  • Evening: Experience Shibuya Crossing and find dinner at a local ramen shop or izakaya (居酒屋) nearby.

This combination gives you traditional streets, a modern landmark and a lively evening district within a single day.

Day 3: Meiji Jingu and Harajuku

Day three balances nature, culture and youth fashion, and works well as a lighter day before your Shinkansen transfer to Kyoto.

  • Morning: Walk through Meiji Jingu (明治神宮) and the adjoining Yoyogi Park (代々木公園).
  • Afternoon: Explore Harajuku (原宿), Takeshita-dori (竹下通り) and Omotesando (表参道) for shops, cafes and street style.
  • Evening: Keep plans flexible; a shorter evening helps you pack, rest and prepare for tomorrow’s train journey.

Day 4: Tokyo to Kyoto, Gion and Higashiyama

Use the morning to check out and take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto. The fastest Nozomi service takes roughly 2 hours and 20 minutes between Tokyo Station and Kyoto Station, though Nozomi trains are not covered by the standard Japan Rail Pass; Hikari services take slightly longer and are pass-eligible.

  • Consider a luggage forwarding service (takkyubin, 宅急便) to send large bags ahead to your Kyoto hotel.
  • Afternoon: Check in, then walk through Higashiyama (東山) via Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺), Ninenzaka (二年坂) and Sannenzaka (三年坂).
  • Evening: Stroll through Gion (祇園). Many streets are residential, so avoid blocking paths or photographing geiko and maiko without permission.

Day 5: Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama

Day five covers two of Kyoto’s most requested sights, on opposite sides of the city.

  • Morning: Visit Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) and its torii gate (鳥居) pathways; arriving early helps you avoid the busiest crowds.
  • Afternoon: Head to Arashiyama (嵐山) for the Bamboo Grove (竹林の小径), Tenryu-ji Temple (天龍寺) and the Togetsukyo Bridge (渡月橋) over the Katsura River (桂川).
  • Evening: Return to central Kyoto for dinner around Kawaramachi (河原町) or Pontocho (先斗町).

Day 6: Kyoto to Osaka, Castle and Dotonbori

Transfer to Osaka, which is one of the shortest journeys of the trip. The Shinkansen between Kyoto Station and Shin-Osaka Station takes around 13 to 15 minutes, while the JR Special Rapid service between Kyoto and Osaka Station takes roughly 27 to 30 minutes and is covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

  • Morning: Visit Osaka Castle (大阪城) and its surrounding park.
  • Afternoon: Explore Shinsaibashi (心斎橋) for shopping.
  • Evening: Head to Dotonbori (道頓堀) for neon signs and Osaka specialities such as okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) and takoyaki (たこ焼き).

Day 7: Nara Day Trip or Return to Tokyo

Your final day depends on your departure city and flight time.

  • Option A, Nara day trip: Take a train from Osaka or Kyoto to Nara (奈良) to visit Todai-ji Temple (東大寺), Nara Park (奈良公園) and Kasuga Taisha (春日大社), then fly out from Kansai International Airport (関西国際空港) if that suits your route.
  • Option B, return to Tokyo: Take the Shinkansen back to Tokyo and stay near Tokyo Station or Shinjuku for easier access to Haneda or Narita on departure day.

Either option gives your trip a strong finish, whether that means one more cultural highlight or a smoother departure-day logistics plan.

Budget Guide for 7 Days

Approximate per-person costs for a mid-range traveller, excluding international flights. Actual prices vary by season, exchange rate and personal spending habits.

  • Inter-city transport (Shinkansen tickets): Roughly 29,000 to 32,000 yen for the Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka legs combined.
  • Accommodation: Roughly 7,000 to 15,000 yen per night for a mid-range hotel.
  • Food: Roughly 3,000 to 6,000 yen per day.
  • Activities and entry fees: Roughly 1,500 to 3,500 yen per day.

For 2026, the standard 7-day Japan Rail Pass costs 50,000 yen, rising to 53,000 yen for passes purchased from 1 October 2026. Compare this against point-to-point Shinkansen fares for your exact route, since a single Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo loop may cost less as separate tickets than a full rail pass, depending on how many long-distance trips you take.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for Japan?

Seven days is enough for a focused Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka route, but it is tight for adding extra regions such as Hiroshima or Hokkaido without cutting time from the main three cities.

Should I buy a Japan Rail Pass for this itinerary?

Compare the current 7-day pass price against point-to-point Shinkansen tickets for your exact route before buying, since pass value depends on how many long-distance journeys you make and whether you use faster, pass-excluded Nozomi services.

Can I add Hiroshima to a 7-day trip?

It is possible from Osaka using the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, but it will compress your remaining days significantly. Hiroshima fits more comfortably into a 9 or 10-day itinerary.

Is this route suitable for families?

Yes, with careful pacing. Children often enjoy the contrast between Tokyo, Kyoto’s temples and Osaka’s food culture, provided each day includes some downtime rather than back-to-back sightseeing.

This 7-day Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka route gives first-time visitors a well-paced introduction to Japan using fast, reliable Shinkansen connections. Save this itinerary before booking trains and hotels, and adjust the daily order slightly if a particular temple, festival or seasonal event affects opening times.
